 SR Series - Details

1.  Cabinet and Appearance

  • Cabinet construction is 13-ply birch plywood (current SR models use 7-ply maple). The benefit is increased structural rigidity for greater ruggedness and reduced sidewall flexing for improved low-frequency performance.
  • Cabinet finish is changed to Duraflex. This provides a much more contemporary and marketable appearance. The switch from carpet covering to DuraFlex allows for a superior joint detail that translates to greater structural integrity and improved cabinet rigidity.
  • All metal handles (SR used a metal hand hold and plastic cup) are stronger and provide a better seal to the enclosure and are less resonant than the plastic cup design. The handle cups are stamped with the JBL logo.
  • The grill has been changed to a full-face, 52% perforation metal design. The grill is slightly curved and provides a much more contemporary, professional appearance.
  • The shiny, machined speaker basket rings have been eliminated allowing the transducers to blend into the cabinet for a subtler, less obtrusive appearance.
  • The Valox corners used on SR-A have been eliminated on SR-X. Instead, the DuraFlex coating is built up to double and triple thickness in areas subject to impact and abrasion.
  • To prevent the enclosures from "walking" when used under high power, heavy rubber feet have been added.

2.  Crossover and Audio Characteristics

  • Overall, the performance will be similar to the Sound Power line. The greater enclosure volume of SR-X results in somewhat greater bass extension. Off-axis response is much smoother than past SR models. SR-X is better behaved in the crossover region than SR. The sound is still "aggressive" but with the edges rounded off. Speech and vocals articulate very well. Compared with competing models used for evaluation, SR-X exhibits more "depth".
  • Crossover network topology has been changed to Sound Power type. SR-X adds a low-pass section for the low frequency that was absent from SR. This results in a less "mid-heavy" sound and also smooths off-axis response greatly.
  • The same "Bi-Amped / Passive" mode selector arrangement used on Sound Power has been incorporated into SR-X.
  • In "Bi-Amp" mode, all network elements are bypassed (in the case of SR, the HF high-pass section remained in-circuit). SR-X will be able to take better advantage of DSC260 capabilities when used in "Bi-Amp" mode.

3.  Flying Versions

  • All models except subwoofers (SR4715X, SR4718X, SR4719X) and the stage monitor (SR4702X) will be available as flying variants.
